About

David Baratz Photography

I believe each of us has the power to improve the world around us. Through thoughtful landscape design, we can promote biodiversity and climate resilience right at home, all while bringing great beauty into our lives.

Let Bees’ Knees Design help you navigate the world of native plants and sustainable landscaping. I’ll give you the guidance, resources and confidence you need.

I draw design inspiration from the meadows and woodlands indigenous to the mid-Atlantic Piedmont ecoregion. Bees’ Knees landscapes emphasize native plants arranged in harmonious communities that evolve over time, providing year-round interest, functionality and beauty, while supporting local wildlife and ecosystems.

Whether you’re working with a single planter on your stoop or multiple acres, there’s a Bees’ Knees Design solution for you.

I have a Certificate in Landscape Design from Longwood Gardens and have studied ecological landscaping through New York Botanical Garden, Brooklyn Botanic Garden, and Mt. Cuba Center, among other leading institutions. I’m a member of Wild Ones, and the Association of Professional Landscape Designers (APLD). I write a weekly newsletter, The Bees’ Knees, all about native plants and critters. (Check it out!)

Before pursuing landscape design professionally, I worked for many years supporting democracy activists in some of the world’s harshest political climates. While my day-to-day activities are now quite different, helping people better their own corners of the world remains a rewarding constant.
